What the RiverTrax app adds

When the run happens

DIY Fly Fishing describes the Ashtabula as a medium-sized, shale-bottom river with a spring run of Little Manistee strain steelhead. It has no USGS stream gauge, so this page shows the nearest gauged stream, Conneaut Creek, for context.

Access and parking

ODNR's steelhead map marks three public areas on the Ashtabula, all near the city of Ashtabula and the river mouth:

See the ODNR Ashtabula River steelhead map (PDF) for locations. In Ohio you can fish only from public land, or with the landowner's permission.

Stocking

The Ohio Division of Wildlife stocks the Ashtabula River every spring with yearling steelhead, which spend time in Lake Erie before coming back to the river as adults.

Common questions

Is there a flow gauge on the Ashtabula River?

No. USGS doesn't run a real-time gauge on the Ashtabula, so this page shows Conneaut Creek, about 10 miles east, as context. It's a different stream, and its number is not a reading for the Ashtabula.

Where can I fish for steelhead on the Ashtabula River?

ODNR marks three public areas: the Walnut Beach breakwall, Cedarquist Park and Indian Trails Park, all near Ashtabula.

Is the Ashtabula stocked?

Yes. ODNR stocked about 50,000 yearling steelhead in each of 2024 and 2025.

What is the steelhead limit on the Ashtabula River?

In Ohio, Lake Erie and its tributaries have a daily limit of two trout and salmon combined from September 1 through May 15, and you need an Ohio fishing license. Brook trout may not be kept from the Ashtabula River. Check the current rules before you go. Ohio rule 1501:31-13-08.
